Can I purchase now and use it for a future occasion like a birthday or Christmas?

You certainly can. You’ll receive the physical plates to be given as a gift (should you please) and the V750 document as proof of ownership. The final stage of the transfer onto a vehicle can be at your discretion online with immediate effect. We email you about this after purchase. During checkout, provide the “Nominee Name” for the person who will use the plate. Registrations are typically valid for 10 years from the purchase date and can be assigned to a vehicle anytime during that period. The £80 transfer fee is included in our prices won’t need to be paid again when assigning it to a vehicle.

Can I get the registration on a retention certificate?

Yes, when you buy with us you will be supplied with a V750 Certificate of Entitlement, this is valid for 10 years. No one else can buy the registration in this time. You can extend this for another 10 years for free.

What happens to the current plate on my vehicle?

You can choose to take the current registration off the vehicle. You’ll be issued a V778 Retention Document. This applies to private plates and, in most cases, the default standard plate issued to the vehicle. You can do so online here. It costs an £80 DVLA fee to do so.

Does transferring a plate affect tax and MOT?

Tax and MOT are updated to reflect the new registration during the transfer.

Do I need to inform my insurer about a registration change?

Yes, notify your insurer to update their records. This won’t affect your premium (although smalls fees may apply). You’ll also need to update your registration number for any automatic payment accounts you have, e.g Toll roads and emissions schemes. See here for more info.

Can registrations be an investment?

Yes, they certainly can be. If you’re lucky enough to find a registration that becomes highly in-demand you could see the plate dramatically increase in value.

Can the transfer be completed on a specific date?

Typically it takes 3-10 working days for you to receive your documents and be able to start using your new plates. So we can’t guarantee an exact date. However, the physical plates will arrive within 3 working days, ready to be given as a gift. With the official documents following after.

Can Northern Ireland plates be used on UK vehicles?

Yes, NI plates are dateless and can be used on any UK vehicle, regardless of age.

Can UK plates be used on Northern Irish vehicles?

Yes, UK plates can be transferred to NI vehicles without additional costs.

Can I buy a private number plate without having a vehicle?

Yes, when you buy with us you will be supplied with a V750 Certificate of Entitlement, valid for 10 years. You have until the certificate’s expiry to assign the plate to a vehicle. You can also extend this 10 year period (for a further 10 years) for free.

Are there restrictions on transferring a registration?

Yes, you cannot transfer plates to:

  • Vehicles with a ‘Q’ registration.
  • Vehicles that are exempt from MOT or GVT (e.g., tractors, milk floats). However classic vehicles that are MOT-exempt can undergo a voluntary MOT to transfer a plate.”
  • A vehicle to make it appear newer than its manufacture date.

Can I transfer a plate to a motorcycle or moped?

Yes, you can transfer plates to motorcycles and mopeds.

Can I buy a registration in someone else’s name?

Yes, you can purchase it under the recipient’s name (the “Nominee”), making it an ideal gift. See the Nominee section at checkout.

Can I pay the DVLA fee later?

No, the £80 transfer fee is paid upfront at purchase and covers the future transfer.

Do I need the vehicle’s current registration to buy a plate?

Not at the time of purchase. To buy a private plate we only need the name of the person or business to whom the plate will be issued. However, the current vehicle plate is required for the transfer process after you’ve bought the private plate.

What documents are needed to transfer a registration?

You’ll need the latest V5C document of the vehicle you want to apply your private plate to.

If you’re not transferring immediately, no documents are needed, you will receive a certificate of ownership of the private registration.

Do you provide physical number plates?

Yes, free with every order. Additional (paid-for) options include 3D-Gel resin, squared 3D 3mm and 4mm lettering (4D) and 4D with gel finish. To choose these options, see the second stage of the checkout (after entering your address).

How fast will my physical plates be delivered?

Plates are dispatched the same day they are ordered and arrive in 1-3 business days.

What happens to my registration if I sell my vehicle?

You have three options:

  • Sell the vehicle with the registration.
  • Transfer the registration to another vehicle (£80 DVLA fee).
  • Place it on a retention certificate for up to 10 years (£80 DVLA fee).

Do I need to transfer the registration immediately?

No, you can finalise the transfer of the registration to the vehicle whenever you’re ready. We send an email letting you know how to do this after you order.

What happens to my old registration after I buy a new one?

When you assign a new registration to your vehicle, the old one typically reverts to the DVLA’s pool of available numbers. To keep your old registration, you’ll need to request a retention certificate from the DVLA. Are there restrictions on assigning age-related registrations?

Yes, you cannot assign a registration mark that makes a vehicle appear newer than its actual age. For example, a 2020 registration cannot be applied to a 2015 vehicle. However, dateless registrations can be assigned to vehicles of any age.
